Elanor dinged me for a 70% talk ratio on one of my own demos. Fair. I am a bit long-winded.
But here’s what I keep coming back to. For about six years I had Gong open nearly every single day, and it showed me my talk ratio on every call. My longest monologue. Which keywords came up. Real talk - not once did it tell me whether I had actually sold well.
That gap is the whole difference between conversation intelligence and Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™. One tells you what was said. The other tells you how well your rep sold, and coaches them to do it better.
I’ll define both fairly. Then I’ll make the case for why, if making reps better is the job, you want the second one. Tell me I’m wrong.
Conversation intelligence records, transcribes and searches your sales calls and reports what was said: keywords, sentiment, talk ratio, deal signals. Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™ sits one layer above it and scores how well each rep actually sold on every call, against a rubric for that meeting type, then coaches them to it. Elanor Labs is built for that second job.
What is conversation intelligence?
Conversation intelligence is software that records, transcribes and analyzes sales conversations, then surfaces insights from them: keywords, topics, sentiment, talk ratio and deal risk. Gong, Chorus (now part of ZoomInfo) and Avoma are the names most buyers know (as of October 2026).
Forrester defines it as tools that use natural language processing to capture buyer-seller conversations, with embedded AI that surfaces insights to guide reps and inform coaching (Forrester).
The practical definition is what the leader advertises. Gong’s conversation intelligence page lists automatic call recording and transcription, AI-powered keyword and topic detection, sentiment and talk ratio analysis, and deal and pipeline tracking (Gong). Gong’s blog puts it even more plainly: conversation intelligence is “like having a search engine for salespeople” (Gong).
A search engine for salespeople. Exactly right, and I mean it as a compliment. On October 7, 2026, Info-Tech Research Group named Gong, Agentforce Sales and Avoma its 2026 Conversation Intelligence Champions (Info-Tech via PR Newswire). I’d search a call for “pricing,” pull the clip, read the transcript on the train. Awesome.
Here is what none of that does: grade the selling.
What is Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™?
Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™ (RBI) is the discipline of measuring the specific behaviors a rep uses on a real sales call and scoring how well they executed them, against a rubric built for that type of meeting. The output is an RBI Score for every call, rep, team and company - think of it as a credit score for sales conversations.
The question it answers is not “what was said?” It’s “how well did this person sell, and what should they do differently next time?”
A credit score doesn’t list every transaction you ever made. It gives you one number and the factors behind it. An RBI Score works the same way: one score that breaks down into skills and the exact timestamped moments that earned or cost points. When a rep asks why they got a 68 and not a 75, the answer is right there on the recording. No black box.
Conversation intelligence gives you the raw material. Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™ gives you the grade.
Conversation intelligence vs. Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™: the difference at a glance
Short version: conversation intelligence is about the conversation. Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™ is about the seller.
| Conversation intelligence | Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™ | |
|---|---|---|
| Core question | What was said on the call? | How well did the rep sell on the call? |
| Unit of analysis | The conversation: words, topics, sentiment, talk time | The seller: what they did, how well, and when |
| Primary output | Searchable transcripts, trackers, talk ratio, deal signals | An RBI Score per call, rep, team and company, broken into skills and timestamped moments |
| How a call gets scored | Optional scorecards; in Gong, AI answers the questions you write, from the transcript (as of October 2026) | Every recorded call, against a rubric built for that meeting type |
| Coaching | Managers search, listen and comment; AI summaries flag moments | Every rep coached on every call within minutes, with short clips of the moments that mattered |
| Forecasting and deal risk | Yes, in the platforms that bundle revenue intelligence | No - this is not what it’s for |
| Who it serves best | RevOps and leaders who need pipeline visibility | Sales managers, enablement and the reps themselves |
Where does each one sit in the revenue stack?
Four layers, each answering a different question. You probably already own the first three.
- CRM - what was logged. Stages, amounts, close dates. Only as good as what reps type in.
- Conversation intelligence - what was said. Recordings, transcripts, keywords, talk ratio.
- Revenue intelligence - what is happening to the pipeline. Forecast accuracy, deal risk, stalled deals. Gong and Clari (now part of Salesloft) live here.
- Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™ - which behaviors create or destroy revenue. How well each rep sold on each call, scored and coached. The layer that was missing, and the only one about the human.
Layers two and three tell you a deal is at risk. Layer four tells you why: what the rep did or didn’t do in the room. More on this in why sales needs Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™.
Where conversation intelligence still wins
I’m biased, so let me be plain. If you need every customer conversation captured and searchable, if leadership runs the forecast out of Gong, if your SDRs live in Gong Engage or ops depends on Gong Enrich, keep it. Elanor doesn’t do forecasting, deal boards, sequencing, dialing or data enrichment, and isn’t trying to.
One caveat from Forrester: many customers never adopt the advanced features because vendors added capabilities faster than users could absorb them (Forrester). I saw that firsthand. The recorder and the search bar got used every day. The rest, not so much.
If you’re weighing the whole platform, read my guide to Gong alternatives. This article is about one narrower job: making your reps better.
Why Elanor is the better choice for making reps better
1. Scoring is the whole product, not a feature on a recorder
Gong can score calls. Its AI analyzes the transcript to answer the scorecard questions you write, sold on Gong Enable Essentials and Enable (Gong Help Center, as of October 2026). Gong’s own documentation is candid about the limits: the AI “has a bias to answer ‘yes,’” compound questions confuse it, and “sometimes, AI produces different outputs for identical inputs” (Gong Help Center). That is what scoring looks like when it’s a layer added to a search engine.
For Elanor, scoring is the product. She watches the full call, not just the transcript, and grades the behaviors that create or destroy revenue. The whole thing is built around that one job.
2. A rubric for every meeting type, built with you
In a conversation intelligence tool, you write the scorecard questions. Ask the wrong ones and you get confident answers to the wrong questions. Elanor scores an intro call differently from a demo and a demo differently from a close, and we build each rubric with you from your playbook. I’ve run and coached more than 2,500 B2B intro calls over the past decade. You don’t have to figure out the questions alone.
3. One number your whole org understands
Talk ratio is a metric. A list of yes/no answers is a checklist. Neither tells a CRO how the team is selling. An RBI Score does: one number per rep, team and company that breaks down into skills and timestamped moments. The 68-not-a-75 conversation becomes three clips instead of an argument about vibes.
4. Every rep coached on every call, within minutes
In conversation intelligence, coaching is still manual: a manager has to search, listen and comment. So managers coach the bottom of the board and top performers get nothing. Sad but true, and it’s one of the main reasons great reps leave.
Elanor coaches everyone, on every call. An hour-long call takes her roughly four minutes; we analyzed 415 hours of video in one week. She cuts short clips of the moments that mattered before a manager would even open the recording. I ran a call recently that felt awesome; within minutes she scored it a 90 and showed me where to take the deal. No more replaying it in my head.
5. Nothing to rip out
Elanor joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet as a notetaker, or ingests the recordings you already have. Scores write back to the CRM (HubSpot is live; see integrations). Reps keep selling the way they sell; the first new thing they see is their own coaching. Here’s how it works.
The lesson
Knowing what was said was never the point. Knowing how well your reps sold - and coaching every one of them, on every call - is the point. Conversation intelligence gave us the recordings. Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™ is what we finally do with them.
If your team’s calls are already recorded, you’re one step away. Reach out. We gotta chat. We’ll run Elanor on your own calls and you can see the scores yourself.
