One of the most frustrating parts of being a high performer is that you rarely get quality feedback. I lived it for a decade in HCM and payroll sales, first as a rep and then as the manager. Managers think, “this is my number one rep, they don’t need my help. I’ll spend my time on the bottom of the board.”
Sad but true. And lack of development is one of the main reasons great reps leave.
So when a VP of Sales tells me they’re shopping for “AI sales coaching software,” my first question is always: coaching from what? In 2026 that label covers three products that have almost nothing to do with each other, and most buyer’s guides blend them into one list of logos.
Here’s the honest version, from someone who used Gong nearly every day for six years and then built a coaching product of his own. I’ll tell you where Elanor is the answer and where she isn’t.
The best AI sales coaching software depends on where the coaching comes from: if you want reps to rehearse, AI role-play tools like Hyperbound do that well; if you want every rep coached on how they actually sold to real buyers, on every call, Elanor Labs is built for exactly that; and Gong fits teams who want coaching inside the platform that already runs their forecast.
What is AI sales coaching software?
AI sales coaching software uses AI to give salespeople feedback on how they sell, so improvement doesn’t depend on a manager finding an hour to listen to a call. In 2026 it comes in three shapes. Know which one you’re buying before you sit through a single demo.
1. Coaching from real calls. The software reviews what actually happened with a buyer and tells the rep what to do differently. Gong’s AI Call Reviewer, Salesloft Conversation Intelligence and Chorus do a version of this by answering scorecard questions from the transcript. Elanor does it by scoring how well the rep sold, against a rubric built for that type of meeting. We call that Revenue Behavioral Intelligence™.
2. AI role-play. The rep talks to a simulated buyer and gets graded on the practice run. Hyperbound Practice, Second Nature, Gong’s AI Trainer and Salesforce’s Agentforce Sales Coach live here. Agentforce, for example, lets reps “practice tough conversations with a simulated customer” and grades the pitch against the deal’s stage and CRM data (Salesforce Trailhead, as of October 2026).
3. Readiness and enablement platforms. Mindtickle, Allego, Highspot and friends: courses, certifications, content and quizzes, often with some role-play or call review bolted on. One August 2026 roundup sorted the market into those same lanes plus real-time in-call prompting (Cirrus Insight).
All three can be worth the money. They just answer different questions. Role-play: “can this rep do it in a safe room?” Enablement: “did they finish the training?” Coaching from real calls answers the only question your CEO actually cares about: “how well are they selling to customers right now?”
Why isn’t the manager enough?
Short answer: the manager doesn’t have the time, and when they do, they spend it on the wrong reps.
Gong’s own launch announcement for Gong Enable (February 25, 2026) cited Gartner research that frontline managers spend just 9% of their time coaching, and that 65% of chief sales officers say their enablement function is stretched thin (Gong). In Salesloft’s 2025 skills survey, 94% of managers said regular coaching is part of their process while 53% of sellers said they get coached quarterly or less (Salesloft).
Both sides are telling the truth. The manager coaches a sample, usually the struggling reps, from the calls they had time to open. Everyone else gets a pipeline review. I did it too. That’s the gap this software exists to close, and it’s why “every rep, every call” is the first thing I’d ask any vendor about.
Coaching from real calls vs. AI role-play: which actually changes behavior?
Both, in that order. Real calls are the game tape. Role-play is the practice field. You coach from the tape, then drill the fix in practice. Buy the practice field without the tape and you’re rehearsing fixes to problems you guessed at.
Credit where it’s due: the role-play tools have gotten good. Hyperbound sells separate Practice and Perform licenses, and Perform adds real-call scoring by pulling recordings from Gong, Zoom and others; it doesn’t publish prices (AI Tools Bakery, checked October 2026). Gong’s AI Trainer builds simulations “informed by successful conversations across the organization” (Gong). Smart.
Notice what both vendors are doing, though: pointing back at the real calls as the source of truth. Start there. Here’s how the three shapes compare, as of October 2026.
| Coaching from real calls | AI role-play | Enablement platform | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it evaluates | What the rep did with a real buyer | What the rep did with a simulated buyer | Whether the rep completed the training |
| Best for | Seeing what’s winning and losing deals; coaching everyone, including top reps | Onboarding, new product launches, drilling one objection | Certifications and content for large distributed teams |
| Examples (Oct 2026) | Elanor Labs; Gong AI Call Reviewer; Salesloft; Chorus; Hyperbound Perform | Hyperbound Practice; Second Nature; Gong AI Trainer; Agentforce Sales Coach | Mindtickle; Allego; Highspot |
| Blind spot | Only as good as what the AI looks at (transcript vs. full call) and who built the rubric | A great practice score is not a great customer call | Completion is not competence |
6 questions to ask in an AI sales coaching software demo
Every demo looks great on the vendor’s calls. Of course it does! Bring three of your own - a good one, a bad one and one where the manager and the rep disagree - and ask these.
- Where does the coaching come from? Real customer calls, a simulation, or a course? If the honest answer is “practice,” fine, just don’t expect it to tell you how your team sold last week.
- What does the AI actually look at? Gong’s help center says its scoring AI “searches the call transcript for answers” (Gong Help Center, updated September 2026). A transcript loses tone, pacing, silence and everything on camera. Ask for one coaching moment the tool caught that isn’t in the text.
- Who writes the rubric? If you write the questions, you own the blind spots. Gong’s own guidance says to avoid compound questions, prefer facts over judgment calls, and be very specific because “AI has a bias to answer ‘yes’” (Gong Help Center). That’s homework before the first score.
- Does every rep get coached on every call? Or does a manager still pick the sample? Salesloft’s auto call scoring, launched July 2026, groups calls by performance tier “so managers know exactly which calls to review” (Salesloft). Useful for the manager. Ask what the rep sees.
- Run the same call twice. Gong’s scorecard FAQ says, “Sometimes, AI produces different outputs for identical inputs. This is expected and normal AI behavior” (Gong Help Center). Fine for a summary. Not fine for a number that shows up in a 1:1.
- What do I have to rip out? Does it need to be your recorder, dialer and LMS to work, or does it sit on the recordings you already have and write back to the CRM you already use?
Why Elanor is the better choice for coaching reps from their real calls
I’m obviously biased. I built Elanor because after six years of Gong I still couldn’t answer “how well did my team actually sell this week?” with a number I trusted. Here’s the case, against how the big platforms do it.
1. Coaching is the whole product, not a module
At Gong, coaching lives in Gong Enable, one plan on a platform whose roadmap is forecasting, engagement, enrichment and agents; AI scoring is listed on the Enable Essentials and Enable plans (Gong Help Center, as of October 2026). At Elanor, coaching reps from how they sold on every call is the entire company.
2. She watches the full call, not just the transcript
Gong’s AI Call Reviewer “searches the call transcript to find answers to scorecard questions” (Gong Help Center). Elanor watches the whole recording and grades the behaviors that create or destroy revenue. A rep who read the right question off a script and a rep who earned the answer look identical in a transcript. Not to her.
3. A rubric for each meeting type, built with you
With a transcript scorecard, you write the questions. With Elanor, we build the rubric for each of your meeting types with you, from your own playbook, so an intro call isn’t graded like a demo. I’ve run and coached more than 2,500 B2B intro calls over the past decade; you don’t have to guess which questions matter.
4. One number, and no black box
Every call, rep, team and company gets an RBI Score - think of it as a credit score for sales conversations. It breaks down into skills and the exact timestamped moments behind them, so “why a 68 and not a 75” has an answer on the call itself. She dinged me for a 70% talk ratio on one of my own demos. Fair. I am a bit long-winded.
5. Every rep, every call, within minutes - including your best
An hour-long call takes Elanor roughly four minutes, so every rep gets coached on every call, including the top performers managers skip because “they don’t need it.” I ran a call recently that felt awesome; within minutes she scored it a 90 and showed me exactly what to tighten. She joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet as a notetaker or works from recordings you already have, and scores write back to your CRM (HubSpot today; see integrations). Nothing to rip out. Here’s how it works.
Real talk on what Elanor does NOT do today: role-play and benchmark reports are roadmap, not product. If rehearsal is the whole job, buy a rehearsal tool.
Where Gong, Hyperbound and the others still win
Plainly: if you need forecasting, deal boards, sequencing or data enrichment, that’s Gong or Salesloft, and Elanor isn’t trying to be either. If you want coaching inside the same login as your forecast, Gong Enable is the path of least resistance. If you’re onboarding ten SDRs a quarter and need them drilling objections on day two, Hyperbound or Second Nature will earn their keep. If you need certifications and content for a thousand distributed sellers, that’s Mindtickle or Allego. Chorus makes sense if you already live in ZoomInfo.
You can run Elanor alongside any of them: the platform for the pipeline, the simulator for practice, Elanor for the truth about what happened with the buyer. More on that map in the Gong alternatives guide.
The lesson
Coaching isn’t a course, and it isn’t a practice score. It’s someone watching what you actually did with a customer and telling you, specifically and soon, what to do differently next time. Managers can’t do that for everyone. Elanor can.
If you’re evaluating AI sales coaching software this quarter and your reps’ calls are recorded, reach out. We gotta chat. We’ll run Elanor on your own calls and you can compare her coaching to your gut.
